    Your August Homeowner’s Maintenance List

The summer days seem to be flying by and the late summer heat is already upon us. As a homeowner that means it is probably a good idea to focus more on indoor home maintenance tasks as well as what you need to do to keep your air conditioning unit running its best. Here is your August homeowner’s maintenance list.

    Air Conditioner Filter

Now would be the perfect time to replace the air filter on your home’s heating and cooling system. Ideally, you should replace the air filter every 1-3 months to keep the air inside your home as clean as possible. If you have allergies you will want to use a high-quality air filter that will remove pollen, mold, and other microscopic particles and prevent them from getting in the air in your home.

    Test Your Smoke Detector

We have become accustomed to thinking that we need to only check our smoke detectors when it’s spring or fall time change. However, now would be a good time to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home to make sure they are in working order. Don’t forget to change the batteries as well.

    Clean Your Trash Cans

Take your trash cans and make a quick trip outdoors to wash and disinfect them. Don’t worry –  in this heat they will dry quickly.

    Air Conditioner Drain Line Cleaning

As your air conditioner cools your home it removes water from the air and it drains via the condensation drain. The last thing you want in the heat of August is for the drain to become clogged.

Check the line for clogs by slowly pouring a cup of water down the line and have someone watch where the line exits outside. If they are unable to see the water draining or it is draining slowly it could indicate you have a clog and it will need to be cleaned out. Call a professional HVAC company to help you with this.

    Clean Those Bathroom Vents

When was the last time you cleaned out the vents in your bathroom? To help your fan run quietly and efficiently use a brush to remove dust from the cover then scrub with some warm water. Vacuum off the dust from the inside and wipe the blades down as well.

    Clean Refrigerator Coils

Did you know you can save up to $100 a year by keeping the coils of your refrigerator clean? You can find the coils of your refrigerator under the unit behind the kick plate or on the back of the fridge.
