The recent bout of warm weather may have you dreaming of spring and the warm sunshine headed our way on a more consistent basis in the months ahead. If you enjoy gardening then these tips are sure to cure your spring fever.
Good Quality Soil
A robust garden requires good quality soil. Now is the time to start adding organic matter to your soil from a compost pile. If you don’t have your own compost pile, check with a local lawn and garden store. Many times these stores carry a garden soil mix that is made of compost that you can add to your garden.
Before planting in your garden follow closely the tags on the plant that direct you to the amount of sunlight each requires. Those “full sun” or “part shade” tags are in there for a reason. If too much sunlight reaches a plant that needs part shade it can burn it and hinder the plant’s overall health. Too little sun can leave plants weak. Choose the right plant that will grow and thrive in your garden. If you are looking to grow vegetables make sure the area receives at least eight or more hours of sunlight a day. If you are looking for your garden to include ferns, perennials, and smaller trees plant them in a space with full shade.
Buy Only Healthy Plants
It can be frustrating to plant your favorite plant only to have it die midseason. Many stores will take back your plant and replace it with another one, but it’s still a hassle to have to remove and replant. Avoid the frustration by buying plants at a local garden center which usually carry healthier plants. Aim to buy plants that have just arrived and have not been sitting at the store for a great deal of time. If you are having a difficult time finding the plants you are looking for, consider ordering the seeds or bulbs from a plant store online and growing them yourself.
Plant For Year Round
If your lawn only has plants that bloom in spring it can look dreary the rest of the year. For great curb appeal all year long plant a variety of plants that bloom at different times throughout the year. For example, coneflowers are perfect for summer and will look beautiful well into fall. Mums bloom in fall and add wonderful color to any lawn.
If you are interested in selling your home this spring start now by sprucing up your lawn and garden so that your home has great curb appeal. Don’t forget your home only gets one chance to make a good first impression.
