    Quick Fixes For The Home

Carpet_StainsA lot of life happens in your home and after a while it can begin to show some wear and tear.  From scratches in the wood to crayon drawings on the walls, here are some quick fixes to the most common flaws in your home.

    Wood Scratches

If your wood furniture or floor has suffered from scratches there is a quick fix to making it like new. Simply split open a walnut and rub the inside along the scratch.  Continue to do so until the scratch in the wood returns to its original color.

    Tub Stains

To remove those pesky stains from your bathtub mix equal parts of cream of tartar with baking soda and add just enough lemon juice to create a paste.  Apply the mixture to the stain using a soft cloth or your fingers and allow it to sit for at minimum of 30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with water.

    Carpet Stains

If your carpet has red tinted stains from cranberry juice or red wine, it’s not too late to remove them. Start by mixing an equal part hydrogen peroxide and water. Then in a separate spray bottle mix an equal part white vinegar and water.  Begin by applying the peroxide mixture first and allow it to sit for five minutes. Using a clean cloth blot it away and follow it by applying the vinegar solution.  The vinegar is the most important part of the process as it neutralizes the bleaching properties of the hydrogen peroxide. Finally, rinse the mixtures thoroughly with water.

    Crayon On The Walls

If your kids have left you a lovely crayon art portrait on the walls, don’t worry. It will come off easier than you may think.  Add some baking soda to a clean moist cloth and rub gently on the art work.  When rubbing the crayon markings, do so gently so that the paint underneath doesn’t become damaged.

    Peeling Wallpaper

If the wallpaper in your home has started to peel in places, it can be repaired. Apply seam sealer to the wall paper, being careful to not apply too much. Press the wallpaper back into place. Remove any excess sealer there may be with a moist sponge and it will be as good as new.

    Clogged Sinks

If a sink is clogged in your home or not draining as well as it used to there is no reason to grab Drano.  Take a pot of boiling hot water and dump it down the drain followed by ½ cup of baking soda. Allow it to sit for a few minutes. Next, pour a mixture of 1 cup of hot water and 1 cup of vinegar on top of the previous baking soda. If you have a drain cover apply and allow the mixture to sit for ten minutes. Finish by flushing with a pot of boiling water.

    Linoleum Scuffs And Loose Tiles

If the linoleum in your home is showing wear and is scuffed, you can remove scuffs by applying white toothpaste to the scuffed area and rubbing with a dry cloth.  If your linoleum tiles are loose apply a sheet of aluminum foil then place a cloth on top, using a warm iron gently on top of the cloth go back and forth until the glue under the loose tile begins to heat up. Then add weight with a heavy item allowing the linoleum to cool.
